Democrats and Recounts

I have purposely stayed away from all the conspiracy talk surrounding the Presidential election and specifically the Ohio recount. The fact is, however, that a disturbing trend has taken hold. In many instances election night counts showed Republican candidates winning, then machine recounts narrowing the gap and finally hand recounts showing Democrats to have actually won. In Ohio, Bush apparently still won, but with every recount the margin narrows. I understand it isn't enough to make a difference in the outcome of the election, but why do Republicans always initially win while Democrats are left to fight for elections they have rightly won and come off looking like sore losers? All of this makes me wonder if John Thune actually won in South Dakota, if Richard Burr actually won in North Carolina and frankly it makes me wonder if Bush's father actually beat Dukakis. It seems to me that now is the time for Democrats to start raising money for what are sure to be necessary recounts in 2006 and 2008. Here are some examples: Washington, Montana, Ohio

Out here in Oregon we watched the our northern neighbor's election quite closely, and with great interest since our economies are so closely linked. The Dem lawyers were awsome in this recount fight. As I've been posting on my blog, they're the kind of junk yard dogs we could have used in 2000.

Anyway, I was born in Belle Fourche, S.D. My parents were visiting my grandparents in Newell at the time. We lived in Sioux Fall for several years before moving out to Oregon. I watch South Dakota politics, but with blogs I can watch more closely. I was bummed about Daschle. My parents knew him when he was just an upstart.

Come by for a visit. Maybe we can all glean new ideas from eachother. Pretty soon I'm going to be posting a story about 'The Oregon Bus Project.' It's a progressive group that is making in-roads into Oregon's rural areas. We may have very well gained control of our state senate because of them.

I just sent the following e-mail to Sen. Johnson's office. It may be too late for installing backbones in pink tutu Democrat's, but perhaps a little enthusiasm for standing up and fighting might stiffen their resolve a bit.
-----------------------------------
Thanks for this information. Frankly right now I am more concerned that Senator Johnson show
some backbone and join in with US House Democrats to challenge the Ohio Electoral College
votes.

By now Senator Johnson must realize that aiding the Bush administration in any way does not
make him immune from partisan attacks by the Bush administration or its supporters. In fact, it
appears that any Democrat who supports Bush proposals or appointments is targeted as being
vulnerable. Why send them one message after another that he is ripe for attack?

There appear to be enough anomilies with the vote totals from Ohio precincts and in the behavior
of Ohio voting officials that there is legitimate reason for concern from the perspective of being
statesman and good citizens. From a slightly more partisan perspective, if Bush policies threaten
social security (as I think they do and apparently as does Sen. Johnson), then anything that
acts to diminish the "mandate" of Bush seems appropriate and in the intererests of the United States and its citizens.
